This Is How The CSA Program Works

You purchase a share of our vegetable harvest before the beginning of the harvest season.  You then receive a weekly or bi-weekly box (or perhaps a "Flex Share") of our freshest seasonal produce from mid-June to late-October. You may also choose to extend your share with additional boxes of storage vegetables delivered until Thanksgiving, or to augment your Biodynamic vegetables with an organic Fruit Share.

A Shared Commitment

When you sign up, you dedicate yourself to being our customer for the year, thus providing us with a secure market -- a welcome measure of certainty in the fickle world of farming! In turn, we dedicate ourselves to being your farmers and providing you with a varied, nutritious vegetable diet for the season. Not only that, we work diligently to connect you to the source of that diet through our newsletters, a recipe service, our farm open houses, and an open invitation for you to come visit the farm and connect with the people growing your food and with the land your food is grown on.

Shared Risk; Shared Reward

We do our very best to bring you a beautiful and bountiful box each week, but since our boss, Nature, provides no guarantees -- we can't offer any either. One of the premises of a Community Supported Agriculture program is that the shareholder shares, through the vegetables, the farmers' experience of nature's mischief (and blessings).

Not To Worry!

The weather woes would probably never rob you of all your veggies. Even during the flooding we experienced in 1993 and the drought of 2012, we were able to fill our shareholders' boxes every week -- and could barely close the boxes at the height of the season! In recent years, increases in soil fertility and advances in our growing expertise have consistently produced stellar boxes.

How Many For Dinner?

The selection of produce changes from week to week, as does the total volume and weight of the boxes. We do our best to fill your ¾ bushel produce box to the brim, equivalent to about 1½ regular paper grocery sacks. The first boxes of the season offer mainly leafy greens and herbs, and weigh 7 to 12 pounds. From late summer through fall, the boxes may bulge with over 20 pounds of produce. One full share generally satisfies the needs of two people with a vegetarian diet, or four people with a mixed diet.

Really Fresh, Really Local

These days, "fresh" seems to mean fresh off the truck from California. For us, fresh means we hand-pick most of the vegetables in your box within 48 hours of its arrival in your neighborhood. Local means settlers here smelled the smoke from the Great Chicago Fire. Our farm is a 2-hour drive northwest of Chicago, a ½ hour drive north of Rockford.

Know Your Food, Know Your Farm

No anonymous veggies here; the boxes talk! With each delivery we publish a weekly newsletter acquainting you with your food and its interesting upbringing -- a synergy of weather, soil, sun, and toil. We also provide through the CSA recipe service, Local Thyme. weekly recipes and tips, suggested supplemental shopping lists, and a vegetable identification guide.

Come See Your Vegetables Growing Up!

Beyond cultivating a relationship with new foods, shareholders can cultivate a new relationship with food by following the food chain back to the soil; we invite you out to the farm during the season for our open houses, along with workshops and classes administered by the Angelic Organics Learning Center.  You can visit the vegetables, touch the sweet-smelling soil, pick black raspberries from the woods, and talk farming with the farm hands.

How You Get Your Box

We deliver to over 30 pick-up sites around Rockford and greater Chicago area.  You choose the most convenient location, and we bring your box to this site on the same day each week. You have at least a 5 hour window (and up to 10, depending on the site) during which you can pick up your box. We also offer home delivery to many areas in and near Chicago.

Know Your Food, Know Your Farmer

Angelic Organics is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) family farm that has been growing Biodynamic vegetables and herbs for people in the Chicago and North Central Illinois area since 1991. (We currently grow for over 1600 Shareholders/Customers.) We work directly with households like yours, without the intermediary of stores or wholesalers. This allows us to provide the freshest quality produce and the most competitive organic prices.

Things are a lot different now in the healthy food movement, compared to the 90's when Angelic Organics was one of the first CSA's in the region. There are many CSA farms serving the Chicago area today, and numerous other ways for people to receive organic vegetables. So, we made a list of what makes Angelic Organics special. We hope our list makes you as excited about Angelic Organics as we are.

Ten Reasons Why Angelic Organics is Special

We have been Raising Vegetables for our CSA for 24 Years, one of the first CSAs in the Midwest

We have soil, infrastructure, equipment, managers and crew to grow great crops, year after year.  Many of our employees have been with us over 10, even 20 years. And then there's Farmer John, who's been farming since 1957, when he started taking care of the chickens here.

We are Fortified Against Drought and Heat

Angelic Organics has two deep wells, powerful irrigation systems, and ample refrigeration space. Because of this and our stellar crew, we had a fabulous year in 2012, a year of record drought and heat. In 2013, in spite of extensive spring flooding, our excellent crew and great lineup of equipment got the crops in on time, and we packed boxes full from the first week of the season through the last.

Besides being Certified Organic, we grow Biodynamically

Beyond meeting the requirements of farming organically, we are committed to nurturing soils and plants to extraordinary health!  In 1993, this goal led us to adopt Biodynamic farming practices, which enhance both the substance and the forces in food. Learn more about our Biodynamic program.

Custom Menu Planning

Shares will now include a free custom menu planning service through our partnership with Local Thyme. The menus will be designed to use every item in your box along with a weekly shopping list of all the items needed to cook your CSA produce. Omnivore, vegetarian and gluten-free menu plans are all included.

Value of the Share

Eat healthy for less. Overall, based on various comparison studies we've seen and also based on analyses of our own share prices, you can expect your Angelic Organics CSA share to cost about 1/4 to 1/3 less than if you bought comparable organic vegetables from a grocery store such as Whole Foods.

Over 30 Pick-up Locations

We know that many of our shareholders have busy lives so we offer over 30 locations, for your convenience, where you can pick up your share.

Harvest from our U-Pick Garden

We realize that many people, especially children, love to get out and harvest their own vegetables, herbs and flowers. Therefore we also grow a U-Pick garden here on the farm so our shareholders can experience harvesting them on their own.

Angelic Organics Learning Center

The Learning Center empowers people to create sustainable communities of soils, plants, animals and people through educational, creative, and experiential programs. It's a tremendous educational resource headquartered at Angelic Organics, offering myriad programs that connect people to the earth and one another.

The Real Dirt on Farmer John”, a Feature Film about Angelic Organics

“The Real Dirt on Farmer John” is a haunting odyssey which documents over 50 years of Farmer John's farm and his life. The film has been seen by millions in theaters and on television throughout the world, and has won 31 festival awards. Get to know your farm and your farmer from the comfort of your home via Netflix or Amazon.
